What is the best video format for sharing?

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. It plays natively on every browser, phone, TV, console, and social platform, and offers an excellent quality-to-size ratio. Only pick something else when a specific workflow demands it.

What's the difference between a video container and a codec?

The container (MP4, MKV, MOV) is the wrapper that holds streams; the codec (H.264, VP9, AV1) is the compression method used for the video and audio inside. Compatibility depends on both — which is why a converter sometimes only swaps the container (fast, lossless) and sometimes must re-encode.

Why are GIFs so much bigger than MP4 videos?

GIF stores every frame as a separate 256-color image with 1987-era compression, while modern video codecs encode only what changes between frames. Converting GIF to MP4 routinely shrinks files by 90% or more.

Will converting a video reduce its quality?

Re-encoding is technically lossy, but at high quality settings the result is visually indistinguishable from the source. When the codecs already match the target container (common for MKV→MP4), the streams can be copied without any quality loss at all.
