What happens to quality when converting M4A to MP3?

What is M4A? (MPEG-4 Audio)
M4A is the audio-only variant of the MP4 container, popularized by Apple's iTunes. It almost always contains AAC audio (lossy) or ALAC (Apple Lossless), and it is the native format of iPhone voice memos and Apple Music downloads.

Will converting M4A to MP3 lose quality?

My M4A might be Apple Lossless — does that matter?
Yes. If the M4A holds ALAC, it's lossless, and MP3 will permanently discard real quality. Convert ALAC to FLAC or WAV instead if fidelity matters, or to MP3 only for portable copies.
